Community Power For Miracle Mile Cleanup

Trellis rung in the season of gratitude by giving back to our McDowell Road community at the Miracle Mile Fall Cleanup on November 4th. Made possible by a partnership between the Phoenix Community Alliance’s McDowell Road Revitalization Committee, Trellis, the City of Phoenix, the Miracle Mile Merchants Association, and Keep Phoenix Beautiful, the cleanup was indeed a community led effort. Armed with weed-whackers, trash pickers, paint rollers, and more, nearly 140 community heroes took to the streets and alleyways between 12th Street and State Route 51 along McDowell Road to totally transform our neighborhood.

Kids and teens from the Boys & Girls Club Warner A. Gabel Branch, ASU Preparatory Academy, Scott-Foundation, and G-Road, were among the most remarkable cleanup leaders, taking action by painting numerous walls full of graffiti and working together to pick up countless bags of litter. Likewise, our street sides and alleyways could not have been made squeaky clean without the help of so many folks who live and work in the Miracle Mile McDowell Community every day. Residents from the Coronado, Garfield, & Creighton neighborhoods teamed up with local business owners including Amstrong Prior Inc., Chiropractic Del Sol, Capstone Realty Professionals and so many more as they scoured 6 alleyways. Longtime business owner at 18th Street and McDowell, John Armstrong of Armstrong Prior Inc., even exclaimed about the alley behind his building, “This alley has never been this clean!” After all was said and done, accomplished volunteers piled into the McDowell Market & Palabras Bilingual Bookstore to read, play games, enjoy each other’s company, and relish in the benefits of their hard work. Lastly, sandwiches from Ike’s Love & Sandwiches and giveaways from The Smyl Co., Miracle Mile Deli, 850zip, & Arizona Diamondbacks made the day even brighter.

At Trellis, we strive to make stable homes and communities possible and we are immeasurably thankful for the students, families, residents, businesses, and more who come together to truly make a difference. The Miracle Mile Fall Cleanup proves that we can accomplish great things when we gather together as a community.
