From financial literacy to obtaining a home loan and everything in between.
Emma knew she needed to buy her own home. The apartment she shared with her young son was small and the rent kept going up. She started working with Brisa Moreno, a real estate agent from Mojica & Associates. A single mom, Emma wondered how she would ever be able to afford a home in this current housing market. Brisa suggested that Emma contact Trellis.
Making the dream of homeownership come true
Trellis is a Phoenix-based non-profit organization whose mission is to making stable homes and communities possible. Trellis achieves this through financial literacy classes, the construction of quality housing, and by offering an array of mortgage loan options and down payment assistance programs.
Financial counseling
When Emma contacted Trellis, she was paired with Teresa Torres, one of the Trellis counselors. The two discussed Emma’s current situation and her housing aspirations. Emma said that Teresa was wonderful and understanding. During the one-on-one sessions, Teresa suggested that Emma should take the financial literacy class offered by Trellis. Even though Emma works in accounting, she learned a lot through the course about personal finance and budgeting, as well as goal setting and the steps needed to prepare to buy a house.
Getting a mortgage
Soon Brisa found Emma a house. Now she needed a home loan. This is where Daniel Gonzalez and Dalia Zepeda of Trellis Lending came in to offer their expertise. They walked Emma through the entire mortgage loan process. Emma said that Daniel and Dalia really knew the available programs and which ones best fit her situation. Then the counseling and lending departments were also able to find Emma financial help through a down payment assistance program. Additionally, she said that they were very professional, on task, and not only reached out to her when they needed something, but were quick to reply to her questions.
Emma becomes a homeowner
Emma closed on her loan and has moved into her new home. She was able to buy a home in her son’s school district and is only five minutes from her office. Furthermore, Emma is paying less per month to own her home than she was paying rent.
